Stephen Dunn (sound engineer)
Stephen Dunn (born December 26, 1894 in Modesto , California , † February 3, 1980 in Napa , California) was an American engineer with a brief but eminently successful activity as a sound engineer for the Hollywood film of the 1940s.
Life
Dunn had studied engineering at the University of California . From 1917 to 1921 he worked as an engineer for the electricity company Westinghouse and then, from 1922 to 1928, worked as a manager for the San Francisco- based company Clapp & La Moree. In 1928/29 Dunn worked as a radio and public address designer before he went to the radio studio of the production company RKO as chief transmission engineer. He worked there from 1930 to 1942.
In the years 1942 to 1945 Dunn worked as a sound engineer for only four RKO films and received an Oscar nomination in the category of best sound for all four performances . For This is my country and The Bells of St. Mary he was able to receive the Academy Award in 1944 and 1946 respectively. He also received the Scientific and Engineering Award for his work on music in Manhattan . Soon after, Dunn retired from the film industry.
