Ependes Observatory

The Ependes observatory is a school and public observatory near the town of Freiburg in western Switzerland . It is 700 m above sea level and is supported by the non-profit Robert A. Naef Foundation. The day-to-day business is carried out by the local astro club, Friends of the Ependes Observatory .

The observatory hides an antique refractor under its 4 m dome and has a small seminar room and ancillary rooms in the adjacent low-rise building. There are two mirror telescopes under the sliding roof: a Celestron 14 and a Hypergraph (50 cm). Next to it there is a coelostat which sends the sunlight into the basement. The observatory is open to the public free of charge every Friday evening. The schools in the canton of Friborg have special visiting options , holiday pass holders and groups can reserve the observatory on Wednesday or Saturday evening. A planet trail has also been laid out nearby .
