Steve Arneil

Steve Arneil (born August 29, 1934 in Krugersdorp , South Africa ) is a British budoka and pioneer of karate (10th Dan Hanshi ).

Life

He first studied Judo and Kempō in South Africa before moving to Gōjū-ryū Karate under Gogen Yamaguchi in 1960 and finally to Kyōkushin under Mas' Oyama. Arneil, who opened the first English dōjō of the Kyōkushinkai in 1960 after spending two years in Japan, successfully fought a 100-man fight (Hyakunin-kumite) in 1965 . He is a co-founder of the European Karate Organization (EKO), was its chairman from 1988 to 1991 and a successful trainer within the World Union of Karate Dō Organization ( WUKO ). As a former national trainer (1968 to 1976) he won the team competition of the 3rd WUKO World Championship in Long Beach, USA with the British team in 1975 and was subsequently honored as "the world's best karate teacher". After irreconcilable differences with Mas' Oyama, he left his International Karate Organization (IKO) in 1991 and founded the independent International Federation of Karate (IFK) in 1993. Arneil is married to Oyama's daughter Tsuyuko.

Arneil teaches at Wimbledon Kyōkushinkai Karate (Raynes Sports Ground) in London, Great Britain.
