Yamaguchi Gogen

Yamaguchi Gōgen ( Japanese 山口 剛 玄 ; born January 20, 1909 in Kagoshima ; † May 20, 1989 ) was a well-known master of karate .

Yamaguchi learned Jūdō and Kendō at an early age and came to karate through a Japanese carpenter who secretly trained him. Around 1932 he became a student of Chōjun Miyagi , who founded the style of Gōjū-Ryū . Yamaguchi was the official successor to Miyagi from 1952. He was nicknamed the cat because of his smooth movements .
