Steve Mason (DJ)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steve Mason (born April 27, 1961 in Winnipeg , Canada ) is a British DJ . He was one of the pioneers of techno music on the radio.

Professional background

Steve Mason initially worked as a fitter for radio studios. In 1983 he worked for nine months for a pirate station called Voice of Peace in Israel , which was on a ship.

From 1991 to 2001 Mason hosted a program called "The Steve Mason Experience" on the British soldier broadcaster BFBS , in which he presented techno, house , rave , breakbeat and jungle . Since the station of the British military can be received in different countries, the program enjoyed great popularity in the scene and was an insider tip among insiders. Especially in Germany, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia , Mason had a large number of fans, which was reinforced by various gigs in scene clubs such as the warehouse in Cologne.

In January 2001 the show was taken out of the program at BFBS, as the station turned more towards the commercial mainstream . Mason continued to perform in various clubs.

At the end of the year, the radio show The Steve Mason Experience always had a special edition entitled Experience Top 20 , in which the audience could have a say in the selection of the best titles. There were also several special programs with MC Mystic Man , who participated with rap and vocal interludes. One of these special shows was Valentine's Party on February 12, 1994.

The various jingles that Steve Mason had produced especially for his radio programs were creative , such as a computerized female voice that said “I've got nothing on, except BFBS!” And many others. The most famous jingle began with "This is the voice of experience ..." This was also played at the beginning of Mason's appearance at the Mayday Rave Olympia 1994.

It was noticeable at the station BFBS Germany that the radio programs produced in London were broadcast in mono in the early 1990s (in contrast to those produced in the Cologne studio). At that time, Steve Mason often received letters from listeners who wondered why his broadcast could not be received in stereo . Many techno fans recorded the program on music cassettes . Many recordings of Mason's radio broadcasts still exist today and some of them are offered for download on the Internet. CDs of recordings are also offered for sale on Ebay from time to time.

At the end of the 1990s, The Steve Mason Experience was also broadcast in Berlin by the broadcaster Kiss FM . In Raveline magazine he had his own column for some time.

Steve Mason has been regularly active in the “Warehouse” in Cologne since the 1990s. He also appeared at large events such as Mayday or Love Parade . Steve Mason was also able to achieve some successes internationally.

Mason released an album as well as various EPs and singles. Together with Jens Mahlstedt he published as 2 Bald Men . With Peter Hantke he published under the project names Experience Movement and The Swarm .

Currently (as of 2018) Mason is a design and technology teacher at the Ringmer Community College in Lewes ( East Sussex / Great Britain).

Private

Steve Mason has been married since 1994 and has two children. He lives in London .
