Stephen Joseph "Steve" McMahon (born July 31, 1984 in Southport ) is a former English football player .
Career
McMahon received a three-year scholarship in 2000 at Blackpool FC , at the same time his father, the former England international Steve McMahon senior , became the club's head coach. He made his competitive debut in the adult division in October 2002 in a 3-2 win in the first round match of the Football League Trophy against Scunthorpe United . After a few appearances in Football League One followed towards the end of the season, in three of which he was on the starting line-up, he received a professional contract in the summer of 2003 and came under the aegis of his father to a number of other appearances, including shortly before the end of the game Substitute for the 2004 Football League Trophy. At the end of the 2003/04 season he was honored within the team as “Young Player of the Season”.
After his father left Blackpool FC in the summer of 2004, McMahon junior no longer played a role in the club's further plans. In early September, the central midfielder was loaned to the Kidderminster Harriers for two months in Football League Two , before his contract was terminated at the end of 2004 without having played a competitive game for Blackpool in the 2004/05 season.
He then followed his father and moved to the newly founded Australian professional league A-League , in which McMahon senior had taken over the coaching position at Perth Glory . At the beginning of the season, McMahon was used in 12 league games, after McMahon senior resigned from his post in early December 2005, McMahon junior did not come to any further use. It had previously been announced that the club president refused to extend McMahon junior's contract. McMahon left the club at the end of the season and has since been regularly included in listings of the worst A-League players of all time.
