Steve Tibbetts

Steve Tibbetts (* 1954 in Minneapolis ) is an American guitarist and composer who mixes elements of ethnic music and rock with world jazz in his studio productions and occasionally plays kendang and kalimba .

Live and act

Tibbetts learned the guitar as an autodidact and initially moved in the folk scene. In 1976 he released his debut album. With his second album YR , created as a thesis at college , on which he overdubbing up to twenty guitars and which was awarded five stars by Down Beat , he reached the general public for the first time; this album, which was initially self-published, was incorporated into the ECM program . In his albums, influences from the music of Indonesia and Nepal , with which Tibbetts has been concerned since his studies, can be seen. He is best known for his studio productions, in which percussionist Marc Anderson was almost always involved, and has rarely been on tour. “Beyond the mainstream of jazz, rock and folk”, says the music journalist Michael Engelbrecht, “the sound brew from Tibbetts enchants with an irritating mixture of clever studio tinkering and free-flowing, improvisational sound ideas.”
