Ani Chöying Drölma ( Tib . : a ni chos dbyings sgrol ma ; born June 4, 1971 in Kathmandu ; also: Choying Drolma , Choying Dolma ; Ani : "Nun" is an honorary title) is a Nepalese nun and singer.

Life

Chöying Drölma was born to exiled Tibetans in Kathmandu, Nepal . At the age of 13 she entered the Buddhist monastery Nagi Gompa , where she was taught religious disciplines, including chanting , for 12 years . From 1985 until his death in 1996 she was the personal assistant to the Lama Trülku Urgyen . After his death, the jazz musician Steve Tibbetts recorded her singing in a monastery and added music to it. So she began her career as a singer and used the income from performances and sales of CDs and books to set up the Nuns Welfare Foundation in 1998 . The Arya Tara nuns' school opened in 2000 and the Thangka painting school was added in 2007 , the only school where the traditional Tibetan style of painting is taught to nuns. She has also been participating in conferences on women and Buddhism since 2000.

In her homeland of Nepal she is a media star who not only topped the Nepalese charts, but also made it into the US charts. She speaks Nepalese, Tibetan, Hindi, English and German.

Services

Since 1998 she has been traveling through North America and Europe, in 2005 also with Steve Tibbetts (guitar) and Marc Anderson (drums). She has recorded several CDs and written a biography. In 2008 she provided the musical framework for the Dalai Lama's visit to Germany.
