history

Stevenson was first mentioned in the diocese of St Andrews records in 1225. That year, William de Gullane received permission to set up a chapel at Stevenston Mill. Twenty years later the building was subordinated to the Cistercian Sisters of Haddington Abbey. The Scottish King Robert II donated the lands to William de Douglas in 1359 . A fortress was possibly built at the site around this time. This was razed in 1544 by the troops of Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somersets . In 1560 a new fortress was built on the same site, which is the nucleus of Stevenson House.

The Edinburgh merchant John Sinclair acquired Stevenson in 1624 and added the lands to the possessions of the Sinclair clan . Stevenson House was substantially expanded under Robert Sinclair, 3rd Baronet . In addition, the surrounding parks date from this time. However, the manor house did not get its present character until 1820 under John Gordon Sinclair, 8th Baronet . In the late 1940s, Stevenson House was restored and modernized.
