Sthenarus rotermundi is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 3.3 to 4.2 millimeters long. They are whitish or gray-brown in color and are therefore well camouflaged on their host plants. The top of the body has long, pale hairs and the antennae are yellowish. The cuneus of the hemielytras is at least partially colored red, especially towards the tip.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed in Europe from southern Scandinavia to the north of the Mediterranean region and east to the Caucasus region. The species was introduced to North America by humans in the 20th century, presumably through nursery plants. In Germany the species is widespread almost everywhere and mostly not rare. It has only been found sporadically in Austria, but is probably also more widespread here. Humid habitats such as riparian forests, but also dry areas are populated.

Way of life

Sthenarus rotermundi feeds on the juices of its host plants, gray poplar ( Populus × canescens ) and silver poplar ( Populus alba ), as well as predatory. They sit on the underside of the leaves and are well camouflaged there. Occasionally the bugs can also be found on other poplars ( Populus ) with silvery-white undersides of leaves, such as on balsam poplar ( Populus balsamifera ). Adults can be observed from mid-June to August, and occasionally into September. Under good conditions, the adults appear from the end of May.
