Stictopelta is a genus of the humpback cicadas or humpback chirps ( Membracidae ), a family of round-headed cicadas ( Cicadomorpha ) from the superfamily of the Membracoidea .

features

The insects are about 7.5 to 10.5 mm long. Their coloring is very different, yellow, orange, brown, black or a combination of the colors mentioned. The body is elongated, without outgrowths or thorns, the pronotum only has a straight extension to the rear, which largely covers the wings. The pronotum is relatively smooth and only finely dotted. The head is almost rectangular, about twice as wide as long (high) and rounded at the bottom. Just behind the eyes is a characteristic, small round lobe. The forewings are transparent, relatively long and narrow, they have five apical cells and two conspicuous longitudinal arteries that are forked approximately in the middle. The genera Hebetica and Hebeticoides are very similar, but they can be distinguished from Stictopelta by the head shape and wing veining .

Way of life

Practically nothing is known about the way of life of these humpback leaves. Most of them are caught individually, so they don't seem to live in groups. They live on different plants and suck plant sap .

Distribution and types

The genus contains 21 species that occur in the Neotropic and Nearctic . Stictopelta acutula , S. indeterminata and S. fraterna are known from several countries. The following species occur in the USA: S. carulea , S. marmorata , S. nova , S. pulchella and S. varians .
