history

Hans von Neuberg, the owner of the castle and the market in Pöllau at the time, ordered in his will in 1482 that the castle should be rededicated as an Augustinian monastery after his death. In 1504 his brother-in-law Christoph von St. Georgen-Pösing finally founded the Pöllau Abbey. In the same year eight canons under provost Ulrich moved from Vorau to Pöllau.

In 1677, the renovation and new construction of the monastery began under Provost Michael Josef Maister - initially with the construction of a granary and the Meierhaus. In 1681 the Marian column was built on the main square. In 1698 the central building with the library was completed. After Master's death, Propst Ortenhofen continued the renovation, which was completed in 1779 with the erection of the high altar in the new church. However, the Pöllau Abbey was abolished six years later as part of the Josephine reforms and handed over to the state.
