The pen oak is an old pedunculate oak that is around 600 years old and is protected as a natural monument . It is located on Eckernförde Strasse in Dänisch-Nienhof in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district and is the strongest oak in Schleswig-Holstein with a height of 18 meters and a circumference of 8.50 meters .

Name and story

The oak takes its name from its location next to the former charity, which was founded here in 1669 and discontinued in 1860 due to lack of money. It is a relic of the " Isarnho " (iron forest), which as a primeval forest covered the entire peninsula between the Eckernförde Bay and the Kiel Fjord . In the Swedish Wars of the 17th and 18th centuries, it is said to have served as a lookout on the Baltic Sea, 500 m to the north. A long time ago the crown was damaged by lightning and then trimmed.
