The collegiate church is a Protestant church in Darmstadt .

history

The collegiate church was built in 1892/93 on the site of the Elisabethenstift . The architect Reinhard Klingelhöffer had received the order from the nuns to build the church. He designed a single-nave hall church in a moderate neo-Gothic style, in keeping with the spirit of the times . In 1938 the collegiate church was renovated according to Heinrich Walbe's recommendations . Much of the neo-Gothic entablature was removed and the interior was painted light.

In an air raid in September 1944, the collegiate church was destroyed except for the surrounding walls and the tower.

In the years 1954 to 1958 the reconstruction of the collegiate church took place under the direction of the architect Karl Gruber . An essential feature of the reconstruction and conversion was the raising of the floor to the level of the former gallery, so that a room of the same size was obtained underneath, which is used as a festival and assembly hall. The church windows were bricked up except for the rosettes in order to avoid unpleasant backlighting at the height of the pulpit. The rose windows are designs by Helmuth Uhrig .

In 1996 another glass window by Johannes Schreiter was added.

Monument protection

The collegiate church is a typical example of the moderate neo-Gothic in Darmstadt in the late 19th century. The church is a cultural monument for architectural, architectural and urban historical reasons .
