The Balm Foundation is a non-profit organization managed under private law and based in Rapperswil-Jona, Canton St.Gallen. The foundation creates an offer in the areas of learning, working and living with and for people with disabilities . Based on its guiding principles, the aim of the foundation is to create a society that the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities aims to achieve .

history

In 1956, the Rapperswil couple Gertrud and Walter Hofstetter and around 50 other people founded the " Heilpädagogische Vereinigung Rapperswil-Jona", with the aim of being able to adequately support students with mental disabilities . After the school was founded, the demand for supervised workplaces as a connection solution increased, which is why a textile and industrial workshop was opened. In order to also be able to offer living and employment places, the foundation "Heilpädagogisches Schulungszentrum Rapperswil-Jona" was founded in 1969, which was renamed "Stiftung Balm" in 1995. The foundation expanded its spectrum. Additional locations of the special education school were opened in Rapperswil and Schänis , new jobs were offered in various areas and external living groups were established. The school, work, employment and housing offerings of the foundation are constantly being adapted to the needs of clients as well as social and economic requirements.

The Balm Foundation is one of the largest institutions for people with intellectual disabilities in the canton of St. Gallen. The foundation employs around 350 people. The foundation offers around 360 clients around 110 living spaces and 85 jobs. It also has around 150 supervised workplaces and 15 training positions in 9 different work areas. Special education school

The special education school of the Balm Foundation is dedicated to schoolchildren with a cognitive impairment. The students are individually supported, professionally looked after and led to the greatest possible independence . The offer includes kindergarten, lower and intermediate level as well as an upper level.

Living

Depending on the degree of impairment and their needs , clients of the Balm Foundation can choose from various housing options. In addition to the dormitory, which is designed for continuous care and structures everyday life with activities in employment groups, the foundation also maintains external shared apartments. The foundation supports people with disabilities in living as independently as possible and taking personal responsibility , shaping their everyday lives and developing in their free time. In the foundation's own residential school, people with a cognitive impairment learn to run their own household and to shape their lives independently.

The foundation offers various employment programs and supports clients in their everyday and leisure activities. On the dormitory area is the Balmhof, where animal-assisted interventions are offered, as well as an indoor swimming pool and a gym, which are used for therapeutic and sporting purposes.

Production and service

The Balm Foundation offers various supervised workplaces, depending on the individual performance of the client. The focus is on training and promoting clients as well as integrating them into the labor market . The production and services area has been certified according to ISO 9001 since 2001 . financing

The Balm Foundation is financed around 45% by income from within-canton and 25% from extra-cantonal performance payments. Approximately 20% comes from income from production and own work and 10% is other income.
