The non-profit foundation ProJustitia was founded in 2004 by the entrepreneur Dietmar Hopp and is endowed with around 2.5 million euros.

purpose

Purpose of the foundation is the promotion of research in the field of law, in particular the right fact research for the practice of the German criminal justice in the present, the publication of the research results, and the promotion of reforms to improve the effectiveness of the fundamental rights protection (also individual legal protection) in criminal proceedings . ProJustitia examines the legal reality and analyzes with the scientific projects it supports, what happens to the applicable law in practice and whether or which specific fundamental rights violations occur in German criminal proceedings. The aim here is to uncover possible structural deficiencies in order to protect citizens from disproportionate interference by state investigative authorities. Depending on the respective research results, concrete reform proposals are to be worked out which are suitable to guarantee a higher effectiveness of the protection of fundamental rights in criminal proceedings. The foundation also deals with current political legal problems and takes a position on current legislative projects in the field of criminal law and criminal procedure law.

Research / studies

The foundation has entrusted the Heidelberg Institute for Legal Facts Research eV, founded specifically for this purpose, with carrying out the research contracts. As one of its first research projects, the ProJustitia Foundation presented a study in March 2006 (title: “State-organized anonymity as a method of investigating corruption and economic crimes”) on the Business Keeper Monitoring System . The BKMS is an anonymous reporting procedure (whereby the foundation's anonymity is questioned), which is used, among other things, to combat economic crime and corruption in Lower Saxony. In particular, the foundation defends itself against the fact that the initial suspicion required under criminal procedure law is replaced by denunciation and mere suspicion.

Events

ProJustitia organizes seminars and conferences on current legal issues such as the 4th Petersberg Days in April 2007 (topic: "The presumption of innocence in theory and practice") in cooperation with the Criminal Law Working Group of the German Lawyers' Association.
