The SUR GIR foundation, founded by Jacqueline Thibault in Lausanne in 2001, is a Swiss foundation with the aim of reducing violence against women.

aims

She is active in the Near and Middle East and Asia through social programs (prevention and further training) and aid organizations (help for women in need).

With its actions, the foundation intends in particular to curb several forms of violence:

  • Forced marriage (first study on the spread of the phenomenon in Switzerland in 2006).
  • Women who are cremated or victims of acid attacks in India, dowry-related murders.
  • Honor killing anywhere in the world (handbook published in 2011).

Honor killings, also known as “murders in the name of honor”, ​​are acts of violence resulting from injured honor. The foundation denounces them and takes action by:

  1. Informed in order to remove the floor from the social acceptance of the "honor killings" in the relevant social classes.
  2. Acts with awareness-raising projects, prevention of violence and direct aid in Jordan, Palestine, Israel, India and Switzerland.
  3. The rescue of women is organized with the aim of Europe, who are threatened with death in their country if no direct help is possible on the spot.
  4. Supported women admitted in Switzerland and Europe until they became independent.
  5. Informed the authorities in Switzerland and Europe about this phenomenon, which is spreading all over Europe.

Since 2005 the foundation has had the status of a special advisory body to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations in New York, Geneva and Vienna. Through her involvement with the UN, she has been a member of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations with Advisory Relations with the UN (CONGO) since 2008.

The foundation is recognized as an expert in the Council of Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly for the right of women to live without violence.

The foundation is also a member of FEDEVACO Switzerland.

Awards

Human Rights Prize of the Republic of France : On November 16, 2006, the Foundation received a special award for its services in the struggle for the social and civic position of women.

Thibault was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in December 2009 ; In December 2010 she received the medal from President Nicolas Sarkozy for the work of the Foundation.
