Catherine Stihler OBE (born July 30, 1973 in Bellshill ) has been managing director of the non-profit organization Open Knowledge Foundation since 2019 . Previously, she was Labor Party MEP for Scotland in the Socialist Group in the European Parliament for 10 years .

Life

Stihler reached in 1996 the degree of Master of Arts of Geography and International Relations at the University of St Andrews and in 1998 a M.Litt for International Security, also at the University of St Andrews. From 1997 to 1999, Stihler worked as a political scientist for Anne Begg , a member of the lower house.

politics

Stihler is a member of the Labor Party . She was within the party from 1995-1997 representative of the Labor Youth in the National Executive Committee of the Labor Party and in 1997 was a candidate for parliament for the constituency of Angus. In 1999 she became the spokeswoman for her party for fisheries in the European Parliament and in 2004 for regional development. In 1999, Stihler co-founded Campaign for Parliamentary Reform. She was chairman of the intergroup for public health from 2000–2002 and has been chairwoman of the multiple sclerosis interest group since 2002 . Since 2004 she has been the deputy chairman of the Labor Party in the European Parliament. From 2003 to 2005 she was the representative of the Members of the European Parliament on the Executive Committee of the Labor Party in Scotland (2000–2001) and since 2002 has been the editor of the “Parliament Magazine”. She is a member of the Amicus Union, the Co-operative Party and the Fabian Society . She was a member of the Regional Development Committee and the Fisheries Committee.

In January 2019, she resigned from office to become Managing Director of the Open Knowledge Foundation based in London.

She bears the Order of the British Empire , which was presented to her for the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honors.
