Dame Margaret Anne Begg DBE (born December 6, 1955 in Brechin ) is a Scottish politician of the Labor Party . She was a Member of the House of Commons from 1997 to 2015 .

Family, education and professional career

Begg was born as the daughter of a nurse and an orthopedic shoemaker in Brechin, Scotland. She received her education first at the local Damacre Primary School and then attended Brechin High School. This was followed by studies at the University of Aberdeen , which she completed with a Master of Arts in history and political science . In 1978, she also obtained a Secondary Teaching Certificate from Aberdeen College of Education . From then on she taught history and English at Webster's High School in Kirriemuir . In 1988 she moved to the Arbroath Academy in Arbroath of the same name .

Political career and points of view

Begg joined the Labor Party in 1983. In the 1997 British general election , she nominated her party as a candidate for the Aberdeen South constituency . She succeeded in asserting herself against the Parliamentary State Secretary in the Scottish Office , Raymond Robertson . After Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh, she was only the second MP in a wheelchair to be elected to the House of Commons. Begg gave her inaugural address on May 21, 1997. In the 2001 elections , she was the first Labor Party MP to defend the Aberdeen South constituency. She was also re-elected in the 2005 and 2010 elections. From 1997 to 2001 she was a member of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee , a House of Commons committee that oversees the work of the Scotland Office . Since 2001 she has been a member of the Working and Pension Committee , of which she has been chairman since 2010. In the general election in 2015 , Begg was unable to prevail against the SNP candidate Callum McCaig and left the House of Commons.

Positions on national issues

At the national level, Bregg is committed to expanding stem cell research . In addition, it works to a considerable extent for equitable pensions for fishermen and is committed to compensating those who lost their livelihood in the cod wars. She also advocates the crediting of parental leave for grandparents who look after their grandchildren.

Viewpoints on regional issues

At the regional level, Begg was one of the harshest critics of Aberdeen City Council during the budget crisis of 2008. Speaking to the First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond , Begg advocated changing the rules for buying property in Scotland.

Awards

In 1988, Begg received the Disabled Scot of the Year Award . For her commitment to people with disabilities and their equality, Begg was named Lady Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2011 .
