Callum McCaig (born January 6, 1985 ) is a British politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

McCaig grew up in Aberdeen . He holds a Masters Degree in Political Science from Edinburgh University . McCaig returned to Aberdeen and worked as an assistant to SNP MP Maureen Watt , who represented the constituency of Aberdeen South and North Kincardine in the Scottish Parliament since 2011 .

Political career

As a candidate for the SNP, McCaig was elected to the city council of Aberdeen in 2007 for the constituency of Kincorth / Loirston . In 2011, the SNP formed a coalition with the Liberal Democrats in the city ​​council . McCaig was subsequently elected chairman of the SNP group. After McCaig's party colleague Kevin Stewart , the previous deputy chairman of the city council, was elected to the Scottish parliament for Aberdeen Central in the Scottish general election in 2011 , McCaig moved up to his position. After only one month, the SNP formed the largest group due to two by-elections and McCaig was appointed chairman at the age of 26. After the Labor Party won the local elections in 2012, the SNP found itself in the opposition.

In the British general election in 2015 , McCaig ran for the SNP in the Aberdeen South constituency . He stood up against Labor MP Anne Begg , who had represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since 1997 . After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, McCaig achieved the highest percentage of votes and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. There he was appointed deputy spokesman for the SNP for energy and climate change. In the 2017 general election, McCaig was defeated by Conservative Ross Thomson and subsequently left the British House of Commons.
