Weighting of votes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the weighting of votes , a vote is weighted differently in an election or vote contrary to the principle of equal voting .

A weighting of votes requires special reasons to justify a deviation from the principle of equality .

Germany

In the German Federal Council , each federal state not only has one vote, but the votes are distributed based on the number of inhabitants of the federal states , so the federal states have weighted between 3 and 6 votes. Historically, the votes were already weighted in the Bundesrat of the German Empire (between 1 and 17).

Europe

The rules of procedure of the Council of the European Union also expressly provide for provisions on the weighting of votes for the Council . Here, too, the weighting of votes is determined based on the number of people .

In the elections to the European Parliament, the votes from the smaller states have a higher weight than those from the heavily populated states.
