Stine Seed is an American seed company based in Adel , Iowa . Stine Seed is the largest privately held seed manufacturer in the world and is nearly 100% owned by billionaire Harry Stine . Harry Stine's net worth was estimated at around $ 5.5 billion by Forbes magazine in 2019 , making him the richest resident in the state of Iowa.

Stine Seed maintains 15,000 acres (61 km²) of farmland in Iowa and develops corn and soybean seeds for the agricultural industry. In 2014, Stine Seed held over 900 patents on genetically modified maize and soy varieties . The researched gene technology for corn and soybean plants is partly sold on to competitors such as Monsanto and Syngenta . Around 60% of soybean cultivation in the US is made up of genetically modified seeds from Stine.

Stine Seed Farm was founded in the 1950s by Bill Stine, Harry Stine's father. The business was initially limited to cleaning harvested soybeans using a portable cleaning device. In the 1960s, Harry Stine began breeding new soy varieties, which he examined for their yield . Since then, Stine has been producing seeds that the company has developed with a focus on high yield and plant resistance.
