The stingene , stangene , was a measure of length in Wallachia and Moldavia . It had been in use since 1683. The measure was equal to the fathom .

The stingene also had smaller dimensions, such as fists or detjete (small inch) or fingers

  • 1 stingene = 8 feet = 77 ⅓ English inches = 1.964 meters (according to the Petersburg measurement commission) = 878 ¼ Parisian lines

The dimensions have been changed to:

  • 1 stingene / fathom = 4 degiti = 8 ¼ feet = 80 7/16 engl. Inches = 2.043 meters = 905 ⅔ Paris lines. The foot was 0.2476 meters = 9 ¾ English inches

The decimal form was used later with the familiar dimensions

  • 1 stingene = 10 fists or feet by 10 fingers by 10 lines
