The Plumbeous Ibis ( Theristicus caerulescens ) is a South American bird from the family of ibises and spoonbills .

The headbandibis is common, but not very common, in eastern Bolivia , central Brazil, and the chacos of northern Argentina and Paraguay .

Appearance

The headbandibis reaches a body length of 71 to 76 cm. The plumage is unevenly gray-black, depending on the light conditions with a blue sheen; the beak is dark gray. The white headband and the lush gray feathers are striking. The legs are red.

Head bandibites do not show pronounced sexual dimorphism .

habitat

The headbandibis prefers open grasslands, pastures and savannahs, but can also be found in wetlands and in ponds.

nutrition

The food of the headbandibi consists of insects and their larvae, worms, snails and their eggs, and more rarely small amphibians.

Reproduction

The headbandibis does not breed in colonies. The individual nests are built on tall trees at a height between 8 and 20 m, mostly near the water. Twigs are used as nest building material, grass and leaves are used for padding. The clutch of 2 to 3 eggs will hatch in approximately 28 days.
