Stjepan Babić (born November 29, 1925 in Oriovac ) is a Croatian Croatian scholar and linguist. As a linguist, he has published more than 600 works.

Life

Stjepan Babić attended high schools in Slavonski Brod , Osijek and Zagreb .

For political reasons (resistance to socialist dictatorship ) he was imprisoned for a short time. After he was released from prison, he studied Croatian , Russian and German at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zagreb . Babić graduated in 1955 and received his doctorate in 1962. He has taught modern Croatian language at the University of Zagreb since 1975.

Babić was Vice President of Matica hrvatska from 1989 to 1992 and a member of the Sabor Municipal Council from 1993 to 1997. He has been a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1977, and since 1991 a full member.

Award

  • Bartol Kačić Prize for scientific impact and research into the Croatian language (Zagreb, 1991)
  • Order of Danica Hrvatska for special merits in science (Zagreb, 1995)
  • Order of Ante Starčević (Zagreb, 1996)
