Stobreč is a suburb of Split in Croatia, 6 km southeast of Split, on the Adriatic Sea in Dalmatia . Stobreč has 2,978 inhabitants (as of 2011). The place Stobrec is located on a peninsula, next to which other districts developed.

history

Stobreč was founded by Greek colonists in the 3rd century BC. Founded. The originally Illyrian ancient site still has remains of Greek walls, which point to one of the rare examples of a defensive system from this time. Later the place came to be known as the Roman settlement of Epetium . In 1080 the place is mentioned for the first time in a document.

In the Middle Ages, Stobreč was known for its water mills and salt pans , and in the 15th century it was a border town between the Venetian and Turkish territories.

Worth seeing

  • The basilica (St. Laurentius ) from the 5th century in the city center is evidence of early Christian settlement.
  • The church of St. Michael from the 13th-14th centuries Century is built in the Romanesque-Gothic transition style.
  • The parish church of St. Maria in Baroque style was built in 1727 and rebuilt in the 19th century. Here you can find the relief of an equestrian figure with wickerwork ornamentation on a wall as a spoil . Grave tablets from the 15th century are embedded in the church floor.
