history

Engraving of Stogursey Castle in 1733 by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck

Stogursey Castle was probably built by the De Courcy family in the late 11th or early 12th centuries south of the village of Stogursey . The name Stogursey is a corruption of Stoke Courcy . The castle was a moth with a 60 meter wide and 2 meter high mound and two bailey , surrounded by a water-filled moat that was fed by the nearby Stogursey Brook .

During the first war of the barons , the castle was controlled by King Johann Ohneland . Its destruction was ordered in 1215, but it was preserved. King John's lieutenant Falkes de Bréauté took control of the castle and after his death the destruction of the castle was ordered a second time in 1228, but apparently again ignored. In 1300 Stogursey Castle was expanded in stone by the FitzPayne family , but then destroyed by Yorkists in the Wars of the Roses in the 1450s . In the 17th century a house was built on the castle grounds. It was restored in the 1870s but fell into ruins in the late 20th century.

Stogursey Castle is listed by English Heritage as a historical building II *. Grade listed and was restored by the Landmark Trust 1981–1982 as a holiday complex.
