Temple of Dionysus on Delos

Stoibadeion ( Stoivadeion ) is a Greek temple on the island of Delos .

The plan of the temple is rectangular. In the temple stood a statue of the god Dionysus, flanked by two Paposilenoi figures . For security reasons, the two figures are in the Museum of Delos . Two columns on the sides of the temple platform are each supported by a large phallus , the symbol of the god Dionysus. The southern column of the temple is adorned with a relief depicting scenes from the myth of Dionysus. The three sides of the southern side with further reliefs show a rooster in the center with a phallus protruding from its neck and head. On the sides, groups of figures show Dionysus and maenads . On one side there is a smaller version of Silenus and on the other a figure of the god Pan can be seen. According to the inscription on the southern column, it was built around 330 BC. Built by an artist from Delos with the name Carystos .
