Stone of Setter, Eday

The Stone of Setter (also Stone o 'Setter) is a menhir ( English Standing Stone ) in the north of the island of Eday (HY 5645 3718), on the ridge between the Calfsound and the only lake on the island - Mil Loch .

The stone is 2.2 m wide at the base and over 4.5 m high. It is thus the tallest megalith of the archipelago outside the island of Mainland . It lies at the foot of several burial mounds ( Braeside , the two-story Huntersquoy and Vinquoy ). 300 m north of the stone is the Fold of Setter, a circular enclosure of unknown date.

Gutter carts cut vertically into the stone from above give the monolith the appearance of a giant stone hand, which secured it a place in local folklore. The stone is said to have been erected by a local landlord, where his wife was killed.
