Stone house by Stora Hästnäs

Stora Hästnäs is the best preserved secular medieval building in the rural region of the Swedish island of Gotland . Outwardly, it is reminiscent of the houses in nearby Visby . The house was built in the 14th century and served as a flat and warehouse for a trader. This is where the city's contemporary architectural styles meet, in the period of upheaval between Romanesque and Gothic, and the traditions of the country house. It is a listed building and is privately owned. However, it is accessible to visitors.

The house has a total of four floors with the basement. A small gate leads to the half-sunken cellar, a Romanesque portal into the cross-vaulted, slightly elevated ground floor, which has the remains of an open fireplace. The floor above can be reached via an internal staircase or through a round arched portal in the gable. The upper floor is furnished with a gallery and three colonnaded Gothic windows along the front . The barrel-vaulted attic was probably used as a warehouse. The goods could be brought in through a door in the facade. A pulley system was often walled in over this opening. The upper part of such a house has been preserved at Vatlings in the parish of Fole.

The house, which is located near Visby Airport , no longer has its original appearance. From the stepped gables of the limestone facade you can see that there were extensions on both sides.
