Stora Höggarn is an island belonging to Sweden in the Stockholm archipelago .

The built-up and partly forested island belongs to the municipality of Lidingö . The island of Lilla Höggarn is to the southwest and Granholmen to the northeast . The ship passage from the Baltic Sea to Stockholm runs north and south of Stora Höggarn . Stora Höggarn extends from west to east for about 580 meters and from north to south for about 490 meters.

While there are some private holiday homes in the southern part of the island, Stora Höggarn is characterized by industrial buildings in the north and east.

history

From the 17th century there was an inn on Stora Höggarn. It was closed in the late 19th century when the building was being converted to accommodate summer guests. In 1903 the merchant Fritz Schmidt opened the first oil port in the Stockholm region in the northern part of the island. In the period from 1915 to 1940, 60 people lived on the island. The former inn served as a school. Extensive oil stores were created. Use was discontinued in the second half of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 21st century, a resumption of industrial use was discussed.
