The Storchenbrücke is a cable-stayed bridge in Winterthur . The road bridge, completed in 1996, with sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both sides, connects the Tössfeld and Heiligberg quarters via the Winterthur – Zurich railway line . Today the bridge is a landmark of Winterthur and is the entrance portal to the city for train travelers from Zurich .

The bridge replaced a narrower previous bridge and was clearly approved by the people in a referendum in 1993 as an alternative to a conventional prestressed concrete bridge . Construction of the new bridge began in 1995 and was completed in 1996. The Storchenbrücke was the first bridge in the world to be equipped with two suspension ropes made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the load on which is continuously monitored.

A nearby Stadtbus Winterthur stop , where lines 4 and 11 stop, was named after the bridge . With the construction of the Storchenbrücke, trolleybus line 4 , which ran across the bridge at that time, was converted into a bus line, first provisionally and later definitely.

lighting

In 2009, the Storchenbrücke was illuminated at night as part of the city lighting concept “Stadtlicht”. The pylon and the soffit are illuminated in orange, the tension ropes in white. LED lamps were used for the lighting . The handrails are also equipped with LED lights.
