The Strömsholm Canal is a navigable canal in central Sweden . It is about 110 kilometers long and runs along the Kolbäcksån watercourse from the Bergslagen mining region to Mälaren . It is named after the town of Strömsholm , where the canal flows into the Mälarbucht Galten. The Strömsholm Canal is part of the Bergslagen Ekomuseum .

history

The Strömsholm Canal was built between 1777 and 1795 to connect the ore mines and smelting works in Bergslagen with the transport routes on the Mälaren to Stockholm and further into the Baltic Sea. It has 26 locks that overcome a height difference of about 100 meters. Only 12 kilometers had to be dug during construction, the rest consists of lakes that have been made navigable. The northern port of destination is in Smedjebacken . The canal was rebuilt between 1842 and 1860 and upgraded for recreational shipping in 1992/1993.
