Road Pyongyang – Namp'o

The Road of the Heroic Youth ( Hangul : 청년 영웅 도로, Hanja : 青年 英雄 道路, Cheongnyeonyeongungdolo ) is a highway in North Korea and connects the cities of Pyongyang and Namp'o via the towns of Chongsan-ri and Thaesong-ri. Their length is about 40 kilometers. With five lanes in both directions, it is the widest highway in North Korea .

The street was built mainly by children and young people. In relation to its size, it has only little traffic, as private traffic is hardly common in North Korea. The driveway in Pyongyang is located directly at the Mangyongdae Student Palace on Kwangbok Street in the Mangyŏngdae-guyŏk district . In Namp'o it leads over the Bridge of Youth into the city.

Initially, the road was called the Pyongyang-Namp'o Expressway , the name of a road opened in 1978 that served as the basis of the construction. However, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly , it was given the name Straße der Heroischen Jugend in honor of the predominantly young construction workers of the socialist state .

Construction work

Street of Heroic Youth

The road opened in October 2000 after two years of construction. The work took place within the framework of a general infrastructural expansion plan and was carried out despite significant deficiencies in machines and building materials. A total of 14 million cubic meters of earth were removed and three million cubic meters of asphalt processed. In addition, 80 irrigation systems, around 50 bridges and connecting roads with a total length of 83.6 kilometers were built. Forests and green spaces were created along the road, and the courses of rivers and streams were adjusted at a total of 33 locations.
