The Way of Human Rights (English The Way of Human Rights ) is a spacious outdoor sculpture and memorial in the city center of Nuremberg . It was created by the Israeli artist Dani Karavan , whose concept won a competition in 1988 in connection with the extension of the Germanic National Museum .

construction

The facility extends over the entire length of Kartäusergasse , between Kornmarkt and Frauentormauer . From an entrance gate through a free-standing wall (16 m wide, 8 m high) made of exposed white concrete , a row of 27 round concrete pillars (8 m high, 80 cm in diameter), two floor slabs ( 80 cm in diameter) and a columnar oak . The elements, which are arranged at equal intervals of 5.7 m, each have an excerpt from the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in German and one other language .

effect

According to the human rights office of the city of Nuremberg, the street of human rights is "both an indictment of the crimes of the National Socialists and a reminder that has turned to stone that human rights are still massively violated in many countries around the world".

The Street of Human Rights was opened on October 24, 1993. In the same year the idea for the International Nuremberg Human Rights Prize arose .
