history

Tram station

The Blasewitz tram station, actually located on the Neugrunaer district, was opened on September 26, 1872 as the first horse-drawn tram depot in Dresden. It was created in connection with the construction of the Pirnaischer Platz - Blasewitz tram line , which ended here. By the time the horse business was closed, over 100 horses and the vehicles of the Continental Horse Railway Company were housed.

After the tram route had been converted to electrical operation, the depot was converted into a storage hall for the electric trains in 1890. In 1925, the listed halls, which are still in existence today, were built as a trend-setting prestressed concrete structure according to plans by the Dresden City Councilor Paul Wolf . Until 1936 these served as storage halls for the tram vehicles of the Dresdner Straßenbahn AG, the predecessor of today's Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe AG .

Bus station

Due to the strong growth in bus traffic in the 1920s, the parking hall in the Striesen district, which had previously been used as a municipal bus depot, was no longer sufficient. For this reason, the city's local transport company decided in 1936 to use the previous Blasewitz tram station as a central bus depot for the city's own buses and coaches. By 1939, the existing buildings were converted accordingly and a large bus workshop was added.

Since there were not enough buses and coaches available after the end of the Second World War, the city of Dresden decided in 1946 to set up a trolleybus operation with a central depot in Blasewitz. In April 1947 the first trolleybus was brought to the Blasewitzer Wagenhalle. The official opening of the first section took place on November 8, 1947 between Körnerplatz and Südvorstadt (Münchner Platz).

In the years to come, the number of vehicles, consisting of trolleybuses and sidecars , grew to 35 sets. All vehicles were housed in the Blasewitz car hall until operations were closed in 1975. It was advantageous that these remained protected from rain, so that the fault-prone electrical systems of the trolleybuses could be dried out after heavy rain. Since, in addition to the trolleybuses, the number of diesel buses had grown significantly since the 1960s, the open space opposite on Avenariusstrasse was used as additional parking space from 1966.

Between 1992 and 1997, a new bus depot with parking spaces and workshops was built on Tiergartenstrasse in Gruna . After its completion, the Blasewitzer depot was shut down in early 1997. Flea markets were occasionally held in the halls. In 2010 it was converted into a shopping center with a grocery store and a few smaller shops.
