A production line is a spatial sequence of production facilities on which production steps are carried out on a workpiece or partially finished product in chronological order.

The production line describes production from the perspective of the production environment, while the production line describes production from the perspective of the parts to be produced. There may be different production lines for different workpieces that use different parts of the production line.

Concrete characteristics that move away from the “street” or “line” character as development progresses are the conventional transfer line , the flexible transfer line , flexible manufacturing systems and agile manufacturing systems .
