The Mumpf lido was a bathing facility on the Upper Rhine in Switzerland . It was located at the eastern entrance to the village of Mumpf in the canton of Aargau . When it opened in 1933, it was considered a pioneering touristic act.

history

The hotelier of the Solbad Sonne, Charles Anz, applied in September 1932 to build a lido on the eastern edge of the village of Mumpf . In his financing plan, with construction costs between 100,000 and 120,000 francs, he promised an amortization after ten years. The Aargau government council gave him permission to build, although a Rhine port and a power plant 300 meters to the east were planned on the same site in the long term.

On the opening day, Pentecost Sunday on June 4, 1933, there were 1200 admissions. On other days too, visitors from the city of Basel flocked to see them in large numbers, both in coaches and by train. The lido facility was around 20,000 square meters. The buildings were designed in a rectangular shape open to the Rhine. These included changing, single and family cubicles, showers, foot baths and toilets, hairdressing salons for men and women, a first aid room, a restaurant with 40 seats and a buffet.

The outdoor facilities included a 3000 square meter garden terrace with a restaurant. From there, visitors reached the lower terrace via two wide stairs, a sports field with a circular route, climbing poles, horizontal bars, swings, snake bars, basketball equipment, table tennis, water slide, benches, etc. To the right of these facilities was a small forest with benches and shade. Finally, a wide beach about 300 meters long ran along the Rhine. You could also enjoy yourself on the dance stage to music from the loudspeaker. Swimming in the Rhine was marked out for non-swimmers. The former river pillar in the Rhine near Mumpf served as a diving platform and was only accessible to swimmers. Also showman could be next to the complex with Salon splendor swing boat, cabin fliers carousel and shooting down Hall.

With the crisis years, the amusements fell sharply, and the lido began to suffer as a result. Charles Anz also died at the end of 1936. In the spring of 1937, Gustav Hurt took over the Badehotel Sonne and with it the lido. He informed the local council and the government council that the construction costs of the system were at least 170,000 francs at the time.

On July 10, 1942 in the protocol , the transfer of the lido noted with all commitments for 53,000 francs into the possession of the Rheinfelden AG mineral springs of the Aargau governing council. The later owners are Salmenbräu and Feldschlösschen brewery in 1950 , both in Rheinfelden , Tersa AG in 1975 and Campex AG in 1995. When the law required constant monitoring of swimming by a lifeguard , the tenants stopped organizing the swimming pool. In 1971 it was transformed into a seasonal campsite . Today the area is used as a year-round inhabited camping park.
