The Strategic and Defense Studies Center (SDSC) (German: Center for Strategy and Defense Studies ) is part of the Research School for Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University . As the longest established center in Australia for studying strategy and defense policy as well as other security-related fields, the SDSC has been one of the leading regional and global security and defense policy think tanks for many years . The current head of the SDSC is Professor Hugh White.

history

The center was founded in 1966 by Professor TB Millar to advance the study of Australian, regional and global strategic and defense areas. The main priority of the SDSC is "[to] contribute to the national public debate on strategic, defense and wider security issues [...], foster regional dialogue and interactions on security questions [...], publish top quality scholarly research." [and] deliver high-quality graduate teaching "

activities

To achieve this, the SDSC published in the peer-reviewed audited Canberra Papers on Strategy and Defense as well as the SDSC Working Papers . In addition, it regularly hosts conferences, seminars and forums with important national and international academics, political decision-makers and representatives of the military. To promote high-quality research in the triangle of security, strategy and defense policy, the SDSC, together with the Australian National University and the Australian Ministry of Defense, has been awarding the Sir Arthur Tange PhD Scholarships in Strategic & Defense Policy, named after a former Australian Defense Minister, to outstanding doctoral students since 2003 .

The employees of the SDSC regularly organize lectures and seminars at other faculties of the ANU as well as at other national and international universities. The center also supports various Australian government agencies in an advisory capacity and was instrumental in setting up the strategic studies section at Australia's main defense training institution, the Australian Defense College . The SDSC assists the Australian Department of Defense and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in dealing with and assessing strategic and defense issues and organizes special training courses for the staff of these departments.

The SDSC is affiliated with the Graduate Studies in Strategy and Defense Program (in German: Program for Graduate Studies in Strategy and Defense), which, unlike most other think tanks, offers postgraduates academic training in security-related areas . Every year the SDSC supports up to three outstanding students with a TB Millar Scholarship as part of this program .
