Strategic ellipse

The term strategic ellipse is a term from Eastern Europe magazine . It describes an area that extends "from the Middle East across the Caspian region to the far north of Russia". This contains around two thirds of the world's known natural oil and gas deposits that can currently be extracted economically (reserve).
