from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Strategic Concept of NATO 2010 was drawn up independently by Anders Fogh Rasmussen , Secretary General of NATO , after consultation with the Allies , presented to the public at the NATO summit in Lisbon 2010 on November 19 and 20, 2010 and approved by the representatives of the member states .

It replaces the strategic concept of the alliance from 1999 and is valid (as of January 2013) until 2020.

Alliance case

The alliance still sees the content of Article 5 on national defense (alliance case) as its main task.

Nuclear weapons

  • Nuclear powers in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (China, France, Russia, UK, USA)
  • Nuclear powers outside the NPT (India, North Korea, Pakistan)
  • unexplained nuclear powers outside the Non-Proliferation Treaty (Israel)
  • Member States of Nuclear Participation
  • Former nuclear powers
  • NATO is fundamentally committed to the concept of disarmament, but wants to practice nuclear deterrence as long as nuclear weapons exist.

    Cooperation with Russia

Cooperation with Russia is to be intensified.

    Missile defense

Overview of the US Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) (illustration by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), 2010)

A common missile defense shield is to be built. The shield is intended to protect the entire European NATO area from attacks by guided missiles. Russia is to be involved in the planning and implementation.

    Cyber attacks

The possibilities of attacks on and via the electronic communication infrastructure were explicitly discussed. According to the document, an alliance case should not be declared in the event of such an attack, but only consultations under Article 4 follow.

    Crisis management

Through closer cooperation with the EU, the UN and non-governmental organizations, NATO wants to promote a networked approach to security (comprehensive approach), which is seen as essential for overcoming new challenges.
