The Mummpitz Theater is a Nuremberg children's theater and is funded by the City of Nuremberg, the State of Bavaria and the District of Middle Franconia . It is also a member of ASSITEJ (Association Internationale du Théâtre de l'Enfance et la Jeunesse - Association of theater for children and young people). It was built between 1954 and 1967 according to plans by the architect Theo Kief .

history

In 1980 students and schoolchildren got together to play theater. In 2001 the Mummpitz theater moved into the tiled building - only 150 m from the place where it was founded. This gave the traveling theater a permanent venue.

The cultural climate in the city of Nuremberg, the successful cooperation with partners such as the Tafelhalle , the State Theater Nuremberg and the Stadttheater Fürth created conditions that allow continuous development.

In the 1980s the right to “free theater” was brought up to city officials and the need for a theater for children was pointed out. An initial grant of one hundred thousand marks for free theater (then for seven theater groups), decided in a constellation of the CSU and the Greens, was a milestone in the development.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the cooperation with the Tafelhalle Nürnberg and the Theater Fürth began. At the end of the 1990s, the Mummpitz and Pfütze theaters offered the Nuremberg State Theater (then still the Städtische Bühnen) a collaboration. The intended children's theater of the State Theater had meanwhile become almost purely a youth theater that mutated into competition in its own house. The management at the time realized that the cooperation with Mummpitz and Pfütze would be beneficial for all parties: the children get to see high-quality plays, the children's theater is made by actors who like to play for children, the state theater can better dispose with its actors and Mummpitz and puddles are financially better secured. The Staatstheater, Theater Pfütze and Theater Mummpitz have been cooperating successfully since 1997 in a model that is unique and highly regarded in Germany.

In 2000, the Mummpitz Theater organized the European children's theater festival “Panoptikum” for the first time, which has meanwhile become an integral part of Nuremberg's cultural life and the European children's theater scene. In 2001, Mummpitz moved into the Kachelbau children's cultural center on the former Nuremberg slaughterhouse with the museum in a suitcase and the CriCri children's circus. The listed building by Theo Kief was converted in 2001 by the Nuremberg architects Niederwöhmeier + Kief .

The number of visitors is steadily increasing and over 20 (of the previous 50) productions were presented to many thousands of viewers in public family and closed school performances. In 2006 the theater education program was expanded significantly. Workshops and courses on social issues such as “violence in schools”, “language skills” or “attention deficits” were developed and offered to schools that are increasingly making use of this offer. In 2009, the Mummpitz Theater initiated the “Nürnberger Kulturrucksack”, a model of cultural education for schoolchildren that works with partners such as the Tafelhalle, the Germanic National Museum and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra . The Mummpitz Theater has been very happy to host the Nuremberg School and Culture Days since 2007. Since 2004 there has been a small children's music series with the beautiful name "Musikuss", in which there is cooperation with the children's museum, the children's art room, the state theater and the University of Music .

Theater Mummpitz has performed with its productions all over the Federal Republic of Germany and has made guest appearances at festivals and guest performances in the following countries: Austria, Liechtenstein, Poland, Italy, Belgium, Hungary, USA, Scotland, Ireland, Canada.

For years, the Mummpitz Theater has done pioneering and development work for children's culture with new cooperation models, good programs and workshops, a successful European theater festival and, last but not least, with plays.

The building is entered in the list of museums in Nuremberg and in the list of theaters in Nuremberg .
