The Salz + Pfeffer theater is a private theater in Nuremberg . It opened in 1997 and is run by Paul and Wally Schmidt as a civil law company.

It is the only permanent house for puppet theater in the city and offers programs for both children and adults.

history

House

The theater is located in the Tafelhof district of Nuremberg at Frauentorgraben 73 . The residential and commercial building in a corner location directly on Nuremberg's Plärrer is a five-storey sandstone block building with a hipped roof, gable, roof core and sandstone bay with sloping corners in the style of Nuremberg neoclassicism . It was built from 1902 to 1904 is available as a Property no. D-5-64-000-497 under monument protection .

In 1905 the Ring-Café opened on the ground floor , which was operated as a restaurant until 1918 and later renamed the Auerbachs Keller . After the First World War , the restaurant was converted into a movie theater in 1919 and was given the name Kammer-Lichtspiele . Contemporary witnesses report that nudist films were played there as early as the 1920s . After unclear fortunes during the Great Depression and the National Socialist era , the cinema in Nuremberg city center, which was 90% destroyed at the time , was reopened as KA-LI , the short form of Kammer-Lichtspiele , during the occupation in 1946 . Due to its proximity to the Nuremberg red light district , the program design of the house from the 1960s onwards mainly served softcore clientele. In the 1970s they moved away from fixed playing times. The program then consisted of bare facts practically around the clock , could be accessed or left at any time and was known to be dirty cinema . In the late 1980s, the cinema gave more and more "market shares" to video stores, and with the advent of "home entertainment" in 1995, the end of the porn cinema was sealed.

After renovation and modernization work, the Theater der Puppen im KaLi opened on February 1, 1997, initially with 90 seats as a permanent venue for Thalia's Kompagnons (then Tristan's Kompagnons ) and the Salz + Pfeffer Theater.

ensemble

The Salz + Pfeffer theater was founded in 1983 by Paul and Wally Schmidt as a pure touring theater and was initially located in the Gibitzenhof district. Other groups were added. After 1992 the too small venue in Gibitzenhof, which still serves as a workshop today, was gradually given up.

theatre

The Salz + Pfeffer theater was re-established in 1997 in the listed building Frauentorgraben 73 , the former Ka-Li cinema, with around 90 seats. In 2008, the former co-operators Thalia Kompagnons left and the theater realigned itself in terms of program design. In 2012 the house was extensively renovated and the capacity increased to 120 seats. International guest performances have led the ensemble u. a. to Bangalore (India). The theater is supported by a development association that offers, among other things, “puppet sponsorships”. The mayor of Nuremberg, Ulrich Maly, took on the first sponsorship .

today

Today the theater sees itself as an “open house” and takes part in numerous international festivals, for example the International Puppet Theater Festival and the Panoptikum Festival.

Today, the Salz + Pfeffer theater with 100 to 130 performances annually has become an integral part of the field of children's and puppet theater and, after more than thirty years of playing, is trying to rejuvenate the ensemble.
