Mulch sowing of sugar beet

Under mulch is meant a plow loose seed process , in which the vegetable matter is a two fruit or straw before and after the previous crop Neuaussaat cover the bottom surface and this characterized in front of soil erosion and capping protects. If the mulch without tillage , this method is the direct sowing assigned (no-till farming) . Otherwise, conservative tillage takes place, which creates a simple seedbed and only affects the sowing depth or restricts tillage to a narrow milling strip around the coulters.

A distinction is made between straw mulch and catch crop mulch. With straw mulch, the straw from the previous crop is used as mulch material, while with catch crop mulch, the residues of the catch crop serve as mulch material. Furthermore, a distinction must be made between mulch sowing with and without seedbed preparation or tillage.

Mulch sowing without tillage offers the greatest contribution to erosion control and a stable soil structure , but is limited to certain types of crops because of the less favorable emergence properties of the young plants .

Mulch sowing with tillage is very common in spring crops. For tillage or seedbed preparation , power harrows and seedbed combinations are used that only work the top layer of soil (minimum tillage / minimum tillage).

Strip milling

If only a narrow strip of soil is worked around the coulter, one speaks of strip seed , strip milling seed or strip till .

A shallow working process is usually sufficient to create a suitable seedbed. On cold soils, such a seedbed preparation can sustainably promote the warming of the soil and thus also the field emergence and youth development of, for example, maize and sugar beet and enable single-grain sowing .
