Strike Committee of Belarus

The Strike Committee of Belarus (Statschkom) is an unregistered Belarusian organization whose main task is the protection of civil rights and organizes protests against violations of rights and legitimate citizens' interests.

Statschkom the Entrepreneurs of Belarus has existed since 1996. On November 25, 2003, Statschkom founded a national strike committee of Belarus. From the very beginning, its chairman has been the entrepreneur and former political prisoner Walery Lewaneuski . During his stay in prison from May 1, 2004 to May 15, 2006, his son Uladzimir Levaneuski represented the chairman of Statschkom.

Protest actions

On January 1, 2000, 100,000 Belarusian entrepreneurs went on a five-day strike. The entrepreneurs' meeting took place in Minsk on January 31, 2000. The meeting resolution contained not only economic but also political demands (the resignation of the Minister for Entrepreneurship).

The private entrepreneurs went on a preventive strike on November 23, 2000, which was supported by over 150,000 people. After a five-day strike by Belarusian entrepreneurs at the beginning of 2001, 200,000 people took part. Over 9,000 entrepreneurs and employees took part in the nationwide political strike. The sole proprietorships took place on May 18, 2001 in an all-political republican strike of sole proprietorships, which was timed with the second All-Belarusian Assembly that took place on that day.

In the city of Grodno , on June 20, 2002, entrepreneurs went on strike. All markets in the city of Grodno were closed. On July 31, 2002, a one-day national preventive strike by sole proprietorships took place in Belarus. According to various evaluations, 100–150,000 entrepreneurs and persons considered to be employees took part in the campaign. A strike took place on August 26, 2002 in the city of Minsk to protect economic and other entrepreneurial rights. On September 11, 2002 there was a nationwide one-day strike of entrepreneurs of the Republic of Belarus. Around 160,000 entrepreneurs and persons considered to be employees took part in the strike, from almost every city in Belarus. A day later, a national action of civil disobedience was called. In Belarus on October 1, 2002, there was a nationwide strike of entrepreneurs who stopped paying taxes and other budget payments. According to various evaluations, 120–190,000 entrepreneurs and persons considered to be employees took part in the strike, from almost all cities in Belarus. The strike lasted 10 days. The entrepreneurs struck on December 19, 2002 in Grodno to demand the resignation of the current President Lukashenko. Over 4,000 entrepreneurs supported this demand and stayed away from work.

A one-day strike was called on January 22, 2003 in the city of Grodno. The city's main markets and mini markets were closed, and over 8,000 people took part in this action. On February 27, 2003, the entrepreneurs' strike committee organized the meeting on the protection of entrepreneurial rights together with the entrepreneurial structures. At the beginning of the "Parliament visit" campaign, Valery Levonevsky was arrested for 15 days. On September 25, 2003, a national strike of Belarusian entrepreneurs was called. About 50% of Belarusian entrepreneurs took part in this action. A demonstration took place in the center of the city of Grodno on May 1st, 2004. The number of participants is about 4000 people. On that day, the chairman of the strike committee Valery Levonevsky was arrested for 15 days and later sentenced to 2 years in prison. The meeting of entrepreneurs was held on May 3, 2004 on Lenin Square in Grodno, attended by about 1.5,000 entrepreneurs. On the same day, plainclothes police officers stopped Vladimir Levonevsky and arrested him for 13 days for organizing the protests. On March 25, 2007, a one-day preventive strike of businessmen took place in Minsk.

Other activities

One of the activities of the strike committee is to help the convicted. For example, in 2005 the strike committee has the books, sports equipment and other useful things in the Iwazewitsch passed -Strafkolonie №22. Statschkom branches are established in the prisons - as of March 2005, such departments were established in 5 Belarusian prisons.
