Epic Rap Battles of History ( ERB for short , German for "Epic spoken chants - battles of history") is a series of parodic English-language web videos in which characters from human history compete against each other in so-called " rap battles ". The two to five minute long videos have been published on YouTube since 2010 and have won several awards.
history
The idea of having two historical figures compete against each other in a rap competition came from Lloyd Ahlquist, who passed it on to Peter Shukoff. The result was an improvised show called " Check OneTwo ", the first three episodes were realized with a budget of 50 US dollars each .
On September 26, 2010 the first battle was published on Youtube, in which John Lennon (played by Shukoff) against Bill O'Reilly (played by Ahlquist). The virality of the second episode in particular, in which Darth Vader and Adolf Hitler rap against each other, increased its popularity . This video has been viewed over 100 million times.
Episodes and Characters
A total of 74 episodes were published in 6 seasons by December 2019. Many characters were played by Shukoff and Ahlquist themselves, there are also actors and other YouTubers who have been repeatedly called in and made guest appearances. The most watched video is Barack Obama vs Mitt Romney, with over 146 million views, which was released during the 2012 US presidential campaign.

When asked about ERB's share of total income in the lives of artists, Ahlquist replied in 2011:
"Nearly 100% of the money I make comes from the channel. It could easily be 100% [...]. In addition to Pete and I, we have about 8 full time employees and then another 5-10 part time folks all of whom earn their livings from the Epic Rap Battles channels. "
