In astrophotography, a trace recording or startrail is a photograph of the night sky with a long exposure time when the camera is stationary or not correctly carried .

Due to the rotation of the earth , the celestial bodies seem to move on concentric circular paths. Depending on the focal length of the lens used, there is a maximum exposure time at which the stars are still depicted as points. This maximum value in seconds is calculated using the following rule of thumb:

Longer exposure times lead to images in which the celestial bodies are no longer depicted as points but as lines (see illustration).
