Cardigan

Twinset

A sweater , even Cardigan regionally also Strickweste called, is a jacket from a Strickgewirk . Depending on the thickness of the material and the wool blend used, a cardigan can warm to different degrees. Depending on the cut, it can also be provided with a shawl collar and patch pockets. The classic combination of a cardigan with a sweater of the same color, as worn by women, is called a twin set .

Compared to a sweater , the cardigan has the advantage that it can be opened and the warming effect can be easily regulated; a jacket does not have to be pulled over the head when dressing and undressing.

history

The English name cardigan can be traced back to James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan (1797–1868). He was a British general in the Crimean War , made famous by the Battle of Balaklava . One of his fellow commanders was Lord Raglan . The clothing requirements of the British troops apparently led to numerous innovations in the British textile industry.

The piece of clothing that the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl wore during his meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev in the Caucasus in 1990, which went down in history as the “cardigan meeting” , belongs to the collection of the German Historical Museum .

In Spain and Spanish-speaking countries (Latin America), women's cardigans (especially the typical high-necked cardigan used in classic twin sets, see picture) are called Rebeca . This can be traced back to the film of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock ( Rebecca from 1939), in which the leading actress Joan Fontaine wears such a jacket from the British manufacturer Pringle , sometimes in the typical combination as a twin set. This film made this new-on-the-market style, which was highly fashionable until the late 1960s, popularized with women around the world.
