The Strider class (English: Strider class) was a series of ConRo ships of the container leasing company Sea Containers Group . The ship type was built between 1976 and 1979 by several Japanese shipyards.
From the late 1960s onwards, Sea Containers conceived several innovative ship designs in order to offer them as a universally applicable charter tonnage. One of these series, the Strider class, consisted of nine units. Its main area of application was initially the Mediterranean and Middle East trade areas with their ports that at the time still largely operated without container infrastructure. The ships were later found on numerous feeder services or in the conventional dry run.
technology
The ships are designed as multi-purpose dry cargo ships with a deckhouse far aft. They are mainly used in container transport. The container capacity is 328 TEU. The holds of the ships are provided with removable cell guides and are closed with pontoon hatch covers that are divided fore and aft. The ships were developed for use in a shipping area with a poorly developed port infrastructure at the time and are therefore equipped with a RoRo stern ramp that opens to starboard and a gantry crane with a capacity of 35 tons that can be moved on deck . In this way, the containers could be driven over the stern ramp through the large passage in the lower area of the superstructure onto the main deck, where they were picked up and distributed by the gantry.
The ships are powered by a four-stroke diesel engine with an output of around 6,700 kW. The engines were built under license from MAN. The motor acts directly on the fixed propeller and enables a speed of around 17 knots. Several auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator are also available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster.
