Striga hallaei is a plant type from the genus Striga in the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae).

description

Striga hallaei is a 30 to 60 cm tall, erect, slender, straight, finely hairy, parasitic , annual plant . The stem is indistinctly square. The leaves are 40 to 70 × 12 (rarely up to 30) mm in size, elliptically shaped, short-stalked, roughly toothed and streaked with three veins. They stand opposite and are shorter than the internodes .

The flowers are alternate in an open grape-shaped inflorescence , which is shorter than the vegetative shoot. The flowers are each accompanied by two bracts , the lower bracts are 8 to 20 × 5 mm in size, leaf-like, the bracts are reduced towards the top. However, all bracts are longer than the calyx .

The calyx is five-ribbed and 6 to 7 mm long. The calyx-tube has a length of 2 mm and is covered with five equally shaped, linear to lanceolate, 4 to 5 mm long lobes. The calyx lobes are thus twice as long as the calyx tube. The crown is colored salmon. The corolla tube has a length of 22 to 25 mm, is curved, widened above the calyx and densely covered with fine hairs. The lobes of the lower lip have a size of 17 × 30 mm and are broadly rounded. The upper lip is 12 × 15 mm wide, notched and bent backwards.

Occurrence

Striga hallaei occurs in Gabon and the DR Congo and grows there in clearings in rainforests.
